Terry Harper built a hockey career on toughness, consistency, and doing the hard defensive work that wins championships. Across 19 NHL seasons, he became one of the most respected stay-at-home defensemen of his era and helped anchor five Stanley Cup-winning Montreal Canadiens teams.
Born in Regina, Saskatchewan, Harper overcame severe childhood burns before rising through the game. Hockey became part of his recovery and eventually the path to a remarkable professional career. He went on to skate for five NHL franchises, earning a reputation as a crease-clearing defenseman trusted by teammates and goaltenders alike.
Harper's NHL resume includes five Stanley Cups, four NHL All-Star selections, captaincies with the Los Angeles Kings and Detroit Red Wings, 35 career goals, 221 assists, 1,362 penalty minutes, and a +169 plus-minus rating. He was known less for flashy offense than for discipline, grit, positioning, and leadership.
After his playing career, Harper served as an assistant coach for the Colorado Rockies and later returned to the ice simply for the love of the game. Even in his 80s, he has continued skating regularly. That longevity and passion made him a natural fit for the inaugural 2025 class of the USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame.
