USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame Stories

Terry Harper's Name on the Stanley Cup

A five-time champion and the story behind the engraving

Terry Harper won five Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens between 1965 and 1971. His name is engraved on the most famous trophy in sports. But hearing the story told in person - that's something different entirely.

The story of Terry Harper and the Stanley Cup - told at the USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame.

Terry Harper's NHL career spanned 19 seasons from 1962 to 1981. He was a stay-at-home defenseman - the kind of player who didn't chase highlight reels but made sure his goaltender could sleep at night. He cleared the crease, blocked shots, and did the work that wins championships. Five times over, it worked.

After retiring from professional hockey, Harper stepped away from the game for a decade. When he came back, he played for the love of it - no pressure, no travel schedule, just hockey. At 84, he still skates twice a week.

Harper was inducted into the USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame in October 2025 as part of the inaugural class of 36 players and builders. He also laced up for the Legends Game that afternoon at Blue Sport Stable in Superior, Colorado - proving that the competitive fire doesn't go out just because the NHL career ended.

When someone has their name on the Stanley Cup, you expect the stories to be about the games. The overtime wins. The parades. But sometimes the best stories are the quieter ones - about what it means to look at that trophy and see your own name staring back at you.
