Pat Long is the founder of Long Hockey, a community he started over 30 years ago that continues to thrive today. What began as a local skate has grown into a structured and active hockey network at the Blue Sport Stable in Superior, Colorado, where players now skate six mornings each week across multiple age and skill levels.
As a board member of the USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame, Pat played a critical role in the success of the inaugural event, working with Fred Merchant, the full Hall of Fame board, and Long Hockey volunteers who helped ensure the weekend ran smoothly. His leadership, commitment to the game, and dedication to bringing players together helped make the Hall of Fame a reality, while honored inductees such as Terry Harper and Bill Orban were celebrated for their lifelong achievements on the ice.
Pat's hockey path began on a frozen gravel pit in rural Minnesota and continued at Carleton's rink in Northfield, where he chased every chance to play. He later skated and lettered at St. Thomas College in St. Paul, then helped coach and grow youth and adult hockey programs in Minnesota before relocating to Colorado.
In Boulder, Pat organized adult morning skates on the CU campus that eventually became Long Hockey. That once-a-week group expanded into a six-day program that has served hundreds of players and built a true hockey community centered on fitness, competition, and camaraderie across generations.
Pat's impact reaches beyond any single game or ceremony. He continues to play regularly, train consistently, and model what lifelong hockey looks like in action. Through Long Hockey and the Hall of Fame, he has helped create a place where players can keep competing, stay connected, and carry the spirit of the game forward.
