The Camaraderie of Hockey

By Robin Martinez • Based on an interview with Fred Merchant • June 2026

One of the most special parts of hockey is something that cannot be measured on a scoreboard. It is the camaraderie that forms between players who share the ice together year after year.

From the locker room conversations to the laughter after a hard-fought game, hockey creates bonds that last far beyond the rink. Teammates become lifelong friends, and those friendships often span decades.

For many of the players honored in the USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame, the game has been a constant throughout their lives. Through different teams, cities, and seasons, the relationships built through hockey remain strong.

The camaraderie of the game is something every hockey player understands. It is the shared experience of competition, respect, and friendship that keeps players returning to the ice even as the years pass.

The USA 80+ Hockey Hall of Fame celebrates not only the achievements of these players but also the community that hockey creates. It is a reminder that the game is about far more than goals and victories. It is about the people who share the ice together.
